Tip of the Month
HIRE THE RIGHT PERSON THE FIRST TIME!
Attracting and hiring the right person for the job is every dentists' challenge! It seems like when it is time to hire a new team member it feels like the luck of the draw if you end up with a motivated person who has the right personality and skills to be successful in the position you would like to fill. Have you ever hired a new employee and within a month, found out they were completely different from the type of person you thought you hired?
Now there is a tool that is practical, fast, business-driven with measurable results designed to help you hire the right person the first time! It is a simple five minute survey that will tell you an applicant's strongest behavior traits and if these traits match the strengths needed to do the job successfully…no more guessing!
Professional Dynametric Programs (PDP) is a worldwide leader in top-of-the-line behavioral assessment solutions for business. PDP has developed a system measuring the degree of the four different behavior traits a person has. These traits are dominance (control), extroversion (people), pace (slow/fast) and conformity (systems/details). One of these four traits will be stronger and dictate 50-70% of a person's behavior.
You can take a considerable amount of guess work out of hiring with these four steps:
- Accurately identify the specific strengths needed to perform effectively in the position you are hiring for. What traits does it really take to be a high performer? One way of doing this is for you - and perhaps a key staff member - to complete a PDP JobScan Survey, a highly effective tool in identifying desirable traits.
- Write an ad that will attract the type of person you need. The best workers are already working for someone else, but may not be satisfied. Rather than the standard "looking for a (job title)" write an ad that will speak specifically to what motivates the type of person you are looking for and will prompt them to call you! If you've completed a JobScan Survey, you will receive a report that includes key words/phrases you can use in your ad based on the job model generated.
- Determine the strengths of each applicant and compare them to the desired job strengths to select your final candidates. You may want to have your best candidates complete the PDP Applicant Survey to determine their unique traits. You can also generate a report analyzing the match between the applicant profile and the job model profile.
- Make your final selection based on reference checks, telephone and personal interviews, and perhaps a working interview. Be thorough, and consider the time spent an investment in your business. Prepare a list of interviewing questions ahead of time, and make sure they will help determine an individual's compatibility with the job. If you completed both the PDP JobScan Survey and the Applicant Survey, you can print out a customized interviewing guide for each applicant based on survey results.
